从英语发展的历史中我们知道，现代英语的祖先是日耳曼语言的持有者盎格鲁-撒克逊人的语言，他们于公元449年从北方欧洲大陆登陆不列颠，占据了本属于凯尔特人的土地，吸收了少量的凯尔特人的语言。以后随着希腊罗马文化在罗马帝国统治期间以及文艺复兴时期的两次大规模传播，英语吸收了大量的希腊语和拉丁语的词汇，其中很多以词根的形式保留下来。
下面我们选择了在现代英语中出现频率较高的一些词根，供大家学习记忆。在学习的过程中需要注意的是，这些词根在构成新词的时候，受前后语音的自然影响，往往不止有一种形式，这个一般在括号内已标出。
